September 4, 2011 - Part 2

It´s now 5:41 pm. About a couple of hours too early for dinner in Spain. I´ve done the laundry, my feet and showered, and had my couple of hours of rest. Now I just sit and wait for a restaurant/bar to open, and then to bed. Walking starts early on the Camino. I usually try to be on the road between 6:30 and 7:00 am. It´s still dark, but with your flashlight you can make your way. Besides, almost everyone else is on the road between 6:00 and 7:30.

Albergue crowd is very different from place to place. Last night a mix of English, French and German speakers, with a couple of Italians thrown in. Tonight, just two English speakers - me and a gent from Dublin. Everyone else speaks French or German, mostly German. Tomorrow night, it´ll likely be a different mix again.

One of thing I´ve noticed now that we´re into September is that the average age has risen. In Estella a majority of the peregrinos were in their twenties. By Santo Domingo that was dropping slightly. Last night and tonight there are only a handful of people in their twenties. Probably an impact of the start of the university year in most European countries.

Maybe that will slow the pace with the other more senior people....and the crowd should get thinner, and the beds more available! Bottom bunk??

Bob,
Great job! Keep going I’m sure it has been physically and mentally tough on you. I always take it one day at a time, counting the days to get home. I know you love history, so to think that back in the day walking or horse riding were the only methods of transportation, it’s humbling to think how much we have compared to our predecessors. I just got back from a course that involved a lot of walking, so I feel your pain, soon I will be heading back to Pet for the level 2 of the same course followed by rappelling from helicopters...I live such a hard life LOL! Nos vemos! Alberto
