Today.... well today was supposed to be an 18 km walk to Calzadilla de la Cueza. Actually it was an 18 km walk through the Meseta, with no villages or fountains until Calzadilla. It´s very hot right now and there was no, or almost no shade whatsoever.
The albergue entrance was crowded when we arrived. I thought it´s likely to fill up fast, perhaps it would be best to continue on to Terradillos de los Templarios. This was another hike of about 9 km.
At least it had two albergues that I had heard of, including an almost new one. I´m now at the Albergue Los Templarios. Very nice and clean, and so far quite comfortable.
The Meseta is easy to underestimate. During August the temperatures soar into the 40´s. Right now, not so hot.... maybe low 30´s. There is very little shade along the way, so it´s just keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Had my shower and took care of my feet. Daily tasks on the Camino. Now I sit with a large glass of agua tonic and ice.
Tomorrow, I will go only as far as Sahagun, about 12 km. My feet are screamin for a rest. We will see if spending a larger portion of the day with my feet up will help.
Sahagun is the traditional halfway mark for the Camino, IF you started at St Jean Pied de Port! The Meseta continues for about another 69 km to Leon, and then past there for about another 53 km.
Can´t wait until Leon. I have promised myself at least two days off. I continue to be about a day or so ahead of schedule. Can guarantee you that that won´t last.
